Nigeria’s Falconets will begin their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign against defending champions Spain on Monday, with Head Coach Moses Aduku calling on his players to approach the opening Group F encounter as though it were a cup final.
The Nigerian side enter the tournament with confidence after an encouraging final preparation in Poland, where they defeated the hosts 1–0 before playing out a 1–1 draw with Korea Republic. Mary Mamudu scored in both matches, giving the Falconets a positive platform ahead of their opening competitive fixture.
Aduku believes the team has done enough in its preparations and is now ready for the challenge that awaits against one of the strongest sides in the competition.
“We are looking forward to the match against Spain with high expectations. We are ready and set to go.”
The Falconets coach is fully aware of the quality of the Spanish team, but insists Nigeria will not approach the encounter with fear.
“Spain is a good side no doubt; let us not forget they are champions of the world at men’s senior level. However, we will approach the game like a Cup final because we want to win.”
A victory would immediately put Nigeria in a strong position in a Group F that also contains China PR and debutants New Caledonia. Nigeria will face China on Thursday before completing the group stage against New Caledonia on Sunday.
The Falconets have reason to believe they can compete with the best. Nigeria have qualified for every edition of the U-20 Women’s World Cup since the competition began, while twice reaching the final, in 2010 and 2014. On both occasions, Germany ended their title dreams.
Spain, meanwhile, have developed into a major force at this level and won the U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2022. That pedigree makes Monday’s encounter one of the most intriguing opening fixtures for Nigeria.
Aduku is therefore placing particular emphasis on the importance of starting the tournament positively.
“The three points will put us in good stead in our group phase campaign.”
The coach also confirmed after the final warm-up against Korea Republic that there were no injury concerns within the squad, giving the technical crew a full group from which to select ahead of the opener.
The Falconets’ preparations have also included a demanding 10-day training camp in Trzebnica, where the technical crew worked on tactical organisation, technical execution, physical conditioning and team cohesion before the squad moved to Katowice for the final phase.
For Nigeria, the objective is clear: avoid being overwhelmed by the champions, impose their own game and take advantage of every opportunity.
The tournament represents another chance for the Falconets to finally go one step further after twice finishing as runners-up.
Spain stand between Nigeria and the perfect start. Aduku has already made his demand clear — treat it like a final, fight for every ball and go for the three points.
