Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, claimed a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Senegal in the first leg of their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup third-round qualifier, thanks to a decisive second-half strike from substitute Kindness Ifeanyi.

The encounter was keenly contested from the opening exchanges, with Nigeria showing early intent. Kafayat Mafisere registered the first shot on target in the 18th minute, while Shakirat Moshood came agonisingly close midway through the first half, racing through on goal after a delightful backheel pass from Janet Akekoromowei, only to miss the target.
Nigeria were forced into an early change in the 42nd minute when Akekoromowei, the Bayelsa Queens forward, was withdrawn through injury and replaced by Folajomi Alaba. Despite the disruption, the Falconets remained composed and disciplined going into the break.
The turning point arrived shortly after the restart. Head coach Moses Aduku’s tactical adjustments paid immediate dividends as substitutes Kindness Ifeanyi and Favour Nkwocha were introduced.
Just minutes later, Nkwocha delivered a teasing corner kick which Ifeanyi rose to meet, powering a header into the net to give Nigeria the lead in the 50th minute.
Nigeria continued to press for a second goal, with Moshood again threatening and Nkwocha rattling the crossbar directly from a corner in the 75th minute. Senegal responded with multiple substitutions in search of an equaliser but were kept at bay by a resolute Falconets defence.
The narrow win gives Nigeria a valuable advantage heading into the second leg, though the tie remains finely poised as both sides look ahead to the decisive return fixture.
