Reports indicate that Chelle is demanding $130,000 dollars per month as part of revised terms to extend his stay with Nigeria.

Speaking on the matter, Okpara described the situation as a routine negotiation that can be resolved through mutual understanding.

“They have to reason it out and reach an agreement,” Okpara said. “It’s like going to the market—you price and, at the end of the day, you agree. It’s something they can solve.”

Assessment of Chelle’s Work

Asked about Chelle’s quality as a coach, Okpara acknowledged that while he does not know him personally, the coach’s track record speaks for itself.

“You can see he has done well from his time with Mali national football team. With the quality of players we have, any good coach who can blend them properly should succeed,” he noted.

The former Paris Saint German star added that continuity could be beneficial if there is a healthy understanding between players and coach. “When a coach understands the players and the players understand the coach, it’s a good thing to continue,” he said.

“Where you are now, you understand the environment and the players. Sometimes, staying put is the better option,” Okpara advised.

Concerns Over Hooliganism in NPFL

Beyond the national team, Okpara expressed concern about crowd violence in domestic football following recent incidents in the Nigeria Premier League.

“It’s sad,” he said. “This isn’t the first time. Something must be done.”

He identified inadequate security as a major issue, placing responsibility on match organizers.

“There’s no reason to have a game without proper security. The rules are clear—security must be on the ground. Organizers have to ensure this at every match,” Okpara concluded.

The former international believes that with improved organization and dialogue—both on and off the pitch—Nigerian football can continue to move forward.
