Ex Eagles coach questions Rohr’s decision to invite Mikel for AFCON

Ahead of the forthcoming African Cup of Nations in Egypt, Former Super Eagles’ coach, Johannes Bonfrere Says Gernot Rohr should have shut the door of Eagles returne against John Mikel Obi.

Mikel opted not to represent the national team after 2018 World Cup where the Super Eagles failed to make it past the Group stage following last Group game defeat to the Albaceleste of Argentina.

In the absence of the former Chelsea player, Nigeria picked qualification ticket to the African Cup of Nations for the first time after missing out in the last edition.

However Gernot Rohr, included the midfielder in his 25 man provisional squad to the tournament in Egypt , following the pair’s meeting in London last week and Bonfrere believed it’s wrong for a player who shun the national team for one year to be included in the squad going to the Nations Cup.

“I really don’t understand the reason he was invited but as a coach, I won’t invite a player who is not injured and chose not to be part of the qualifiers,” the former coach of the South Korean national team said.
“The coach should be in a better position to know the current situation in the team but I think there is something structurally wrong in the Nigerian team” he added.
