Abia Warriors were forced to settle for a frustrating 0-0 draw against Kun Khalifat FC as their delayed EuroMatch NPFL Matchday One encounter finally reached its conclusion at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba, on Monday.
The Oriental encounter, which had been suspended on Sunday after a heavy downpour left the playing surface unplayable, resumed on Monday, August 31, with both sides battling for the opening three points of their respective campaigns.
But despite sustained pressure from the hosts, Kun Khalifat goalkeeper Akuchie Obinna emerged as the difference-maker, producing a string of impressive saves to preserve a valuable point for the visitors.
The Warriors entered the contest with several new faces in the starting lineup, as head coach Imama Amapakabo handed competitive debuts to six of his recruits — Kelvin Ihunwo, Osimaga Duke, Effimi Nsi, Emmanuel Nnaji, Seyi Oguntayo and Chidiebere Nnachi.
The hosts, however, struggled to find their rhythm in the early stages, failing to create clear-cut opportunities as Kun Khalifat remained organised and disciplined.
With neither side able to break the deadlock before the interval, Amapakabo turned to his bench in the second half in search of greater attacking urgency.
The introduction of Innocent Godwin and Ikoi Ettah for Osimaga Duke and Chidiebere Nnachi in the 73rd minute immediately injected fresh energy into the Warriors’ attack.
Two minutes later, Chinedu Iwueze was also introduced for Emmanuel Nnaji as Abia Warriors intensified the pressure.
The hosts began to pin Kun Khalifat deeper into their own half, creating opportunities and asking increasingly difficult questions of the visitors’ defence.
But one problem continued to haunt the Warriors — the finishing.
Chance after chance went begging as Abia Warriors struggled to produce the decisive touch that would have rewarded their second-half dominance.
And when it appeared that Israel Joseph might finally break the resistance in added time, Akuchie produced the moment of the match.
Joseph unleashed a curling effort that looked destined for the corner, only for the Kun Khalifat goalkeeper to launch himself across goal and make a breathtaking save.
It was a save that effectively secured the visitors’ point.
Akuchie’s performance was arguably the defining individual display of the contest, with the goalkeeper remaining composed under sustained pressure and repeatedly frustrating the home side.
For Kun Khalifat, the goalless draw represents a valuable result on the road, particularly after having to return to the stadium on Monday to complete a match disrupted by weather.
For Abia Warriors, however, the feeling will be one of two points dropped rather than one point gained.
The Warriors showed greater urgency as the match progressed and created enough opportunities to win the contest, but their inability to convert those chances ultimately proved costly.
The result also means the third meeting between the two Oriental rivals has ended without a winner, with neither side able to claim bragging rights.
For Amapakabo, the immediate task will now be turning the attacking promise shown in the second half into goals.
There will be little time for reflection, however, as the Warriors already have their next assignment in sight.
Abia Warriors will travel to Kaduna to face newly promoted Ranchers Bees, looking to turn their opening-day point into a first victory of the new EuroMatch NPFL campaign.
After a dramatic opening weekend that has already produced goals, comebacks and surprises across the league, Abia Warriors will know that their next challenge could demand far greater efficiency in front of goal.
For Kun Khalifat, Akuchie Obinna’s hands delivered the point. For Abia Warriors, the search for the finishing touch continues.
The EuroMatch NPFL has its first Matchday One chapter complete — and already, the league is proving that every point will have to be earned.
