Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Greg Etafia has issued a powerful declaration ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, insisting that Nigeria has run out of excuses and must win the tournament to repay the nation after years of football disappointment.
Etafia, known for his outspoken nature and high standards, said the Super Eagles owe the country a moment of redemption following consecutive failures to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
“Nigeria has to win AFCON 2025. That is what the players owe the nation after everything that has happened,” he said emphatically.
With the tournament kicking off 21 December 2025, Etafia stressed that the time for excuses and half-measures is over, adding that Nigeria’s squad is talented enough to go all the way if properly supported and well-prepared.
“We have the players. We have the quality. What we need now is total commitment and zero mistakes,” he stated.

The former South Africa-based shot-stopper placed responsibility not only on the players but also firmly on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), urging the federation to provide the team with every necessary tool to succeed.
“The NFF must give full support. Everything the team needs should be provided. No distractions, no stories, no last-minute issues,” Etafia warned.
He added that administrative lapses, logistical problems, and poor planning have repeatedly sabotaged Nigeria’s chances at major tournaments, and such failures must never repeat themselves in Morocco.
“We cannot afford careless errors again. Nigeria has suffered enough disappointment,” he emphasized.
Etafia also said the coaching crew must set high standards, enforce discipline, and ensure that only players who show hunger and readiness make the final squad.
“You must take players who want to win, who will fight for 90 minutes. AFCON demands warriors, not passengers,” he noted.
He concluded with a rallying call to both fans and officials, stressing that the entire football ecosystem must work in unity.
“Nigeria deserves this AFCON. Everyone, players, coaches, NFF, and fans, must give everything. There is no room for failure this time.”
