AFC Toronto of Canada striker, Esther Okoronkwo has provided details about a lot of money that was allegedly stolen at the Nigerian female national team, Super Falcons’ camp in Casablanca, Morocco, ahead of this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2026).
Sports247 reports that Okoronkwo, who previously played for Saint-Étienne of France, UD Tenerife of Spain and Changchun Dazhong Zhuoyue of China provided the details in a couple of Snapchat posts, with which she accused cleaning staff of stealing cash from many of the players’ rooms.
Okoronkwo, who was born in Abia State, but grew up in Richmond, USA, where she attended Randolph Foster High School and spent two years at Northeast Texas Community College before moving to Lamar University, said a lot of money went missing while the players were out of their rooms.
She further alleged that the players found out that their money had ‘disappeared’ when they returned to their rooms after training, during which time cleaners went in to tidy up at the hotel in Casablanca where the Falcons camped before their trip to Rabat.
Incidentally, the Nigerian team was merely on a stopover at the said hotel in Casablanca, as they eventually moved on Saturday to Rabat, where they will play Malawi, Zambia and Egypt in Group C.
Okoronkwo initially stated in her first post that $500 had been stolen from her, then updated it to $700, after which she named other players who also allegedly had their money stolen.
In yet another post about the unusual camp incident, Okoronkwo added that they were shocked that no positive response came from the front desk staff when the players reported the matter to them.
“Guys, I did my calculations wrong; they actually stole 700, not 500 USD,” Okoronkwo wrote alongside a photo of her Falcons’ teammates in the hotel.
“The cleaning people stole the money. They waited while we weren’t in the room to clean and steal the money. We started talking to them, and they don’t have answers.
“They (were) also started being disrespectful,” added Okronkwo, who inferred further that Halimatu Ayinde could not find $100, while it was also $100 for Asisat Oshoala and $120 for Joy Omewa – all of who she identified only with their first names.
Meanwhile, Sports247 gathered that the Falcons relocated to Rabat on Saturday, after spending 10 days in Casablanca on the final lap of their preparations for the tournament, ahead of which Justine Madugu’s side defeated Tanzania 2-1 in their last build-up friendly on Thursday.
They will now play three group games in Rabat, starting on Tuesday versus debuting Scorchers of Malawi at Al Madina Stadium, following which they will tango The Copper Queens of Zambia at the same venue and then end the first round fixtures versus Cleopatras of Egypt at Olympic Stadium.
