Ogunniyi pointed out in an interview with Sports247 that none of the students complained about having to play football during the ongoing annual fasting periods for Muslims and Christians, which they belong to respectively.

While noting the obvious difficulties they daily face in maintaining their religious obligations, the graduate of Computer Science from Tai Solarin University, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State said he was amazed that all the female students showed so much excitement while playing football.

This happened during the two-day Goals For Girls Leadership Summit at The Stable Sports Complex, Bode Thomas Road, Surulere, where a total of 300 students from ten schools gathered in two equal sets on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Activities for both days began in the complex’s sitting arena with class work in leadership training, followed by drills in football skills on the pitch and climaxed with a mini-competition of four separate matches lasting ten minutes each.

Ogunniyi took another look at the busy schedules the students went through on both days and heaped praises on them for the high level of excitement and endurance they all showed during the activities that ran from 10am to 4pm.

“I know it’s not easy to be engaged in sports activities, especially after first taking part in classroom work,” said Ogunniyi, who is the ICT teacher at Eric Moore High School.

“I took part in football, taekwondo, and basketball from primary to secondary school. So, I know what I’m talking about. In fact, I played football actively as a left-full-back and would have gone far had I not suffered a knee injury.”

The full-time teacher, who was the president of Computer Science Students Association during his days at the university and briefly worked as a football coach after graduation, also praised the students for their warm responses during all activities of the maiden gender programme led by USA-based Damilola Ogunbote.

“I was impressed seeing how my students and the other girls responded with lots of excitement and enthusiasm to activities of this programme. They all concentrated fully, in spite of how people usually get tired during fasting periods,” Ogunniyi reiterated.
