Enugu is humming with a new rhythm. In just 5 days, the streets will turn into a runway as the 2nd Enugu City International Marathon takes over the Coal City on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
The city is changing color. Banners are up, hotels are filling fast, and transport hubs are bracing for thousands of runners, fans, and visitors expected to troop in for race week.
The energy will hit top gear on Monday, August 24 when the 5-day Marathon Expo opens at the iconic Michael Okpara Square. It’s set to be 5 days of brand activations, wellness fairs, cultural displays, and entertainment; a festival atmosphere ahead of the main race.
For Enugu people, this is more than a race. It’s a moment.
“This marathon has given the city a new vibe,” a vendor at Ogbete Market said. “People are talking about it everywhere. Businesses are ready, the youth are excited. Enugu is about to be on the map.”
On the sports front, elite athletes are expected to begin arriving this week to test the 42km course. The elite race will flag off at 6:30AM from ShopRite, Abakaliki Road, while thousands of fun runners will take to the streets at 8:30AM from Chris Tee Petrol Station, CIC Road for the 10km race. Both will finish in a grand finale at Michael Okpara Square.
Organizers say the route has been designed to showcase Enugu’s beauty from busy commercial roads to serene city stretches giving runners and spectators a true feel of the Coal City.
The World Press Conference on Thursday, August 28 will wrap up final announcements on prizes, security, and logistics before the city hits the road on Saturday.
Backed by the Enugu State Government and driven by Nilayo Sports Management, the marathon is being positioned as the biggest convergence of sport, business, and culture the state has seen this year.
Hotels, restaurants, ride-hailing services, and local SMEs are already reporting a spike in bookings and inquiries.
“This is Enugu’s time,”_ a state official said. _“We are showing the world our hospitality, our energy, and our capacity to host world-class events.”
Race kits, entertainment, and fan zones will all be centered at the Expo, making Michael Okpara Square the heartbeat of marathon week.
Five days to go, and Enugu is not just hosting a marathon.
