The executive chairman of Edo State Sports Commission, Honourable Amadin Desmond Enabulele has charged cyclists from his territory to set new targets for themselves and continue aiming to achieve greater things in their chosen events.
Sports247 reports that Enabulele gave the charge during a ceremony to honour the state’s cyclists, who excelled while representing Nigeria at the 2026 CAC African Track Cycling Championship (para and able categories) in Abuja.
Collectively, Edo cyclists boosted Nigeria’s haul of 10 gold, four silver and four bronze medals; with Osaretin Godwin emerging top of all, after winning five individual gold medals and two team gold medals in the junior women’s division.
Osaretin ended the championship with an impressive haul of seven gold and two silver medals, while Divine Ogbe won two gold, two silver and four bronze medals, with Esther Godwin adding another gold medal to Nigeria’s tally.
The Edo trio of Osaretin, Ogbe and Esther Godwin also played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s team sprint success, helping the country defeat Egypt, South Africa, Benin Republic and Zimbabwe; much to the delight of their coach, Angela Okoro.
Para-cycling rising star, Favour Ojieabu showcased her talent by winning two gold medals and one silver, further strengthening her prospects of representing Nigeria at Commonwealth Games and other future international competitions.
Enabulele praised the cyclists for their dedication and assured them of Edo State governor, Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to support their careers and improve overall performance of athletes through his grassroots sports development plan.
He added that it was gratifying seeing Edo State’s products emerge among the competition’s best performers during the championship, organised by the National Sports Commission (NSC) and Cycling Federation of Nigeria (NCF).
The sports boss pointed out that their achievements during the para-cycling events from May 9 to 13 and able-body category from May 18 to 19 further underscored the state’s growing reputation as a location for sporting excellence in Nigeria.
He urged the young cyclists to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to their sporting careers, while also emphasising that Governor Okpebholo will continue to invest in nurturing talents capable of competing successfully on the global stage.
Enabulele further disclosed that the commission will provide immediate financial support to encourage the athletes while discussions continue on broader measures to enhance their development and preparation for future competitions.
“You have represented Nigeria excellently, and we are proud of what you have achieved. What you have won can never be taken away from you. Set new targets for yourselves and continue striving for greater heights,” Enabulele tutored them.
