Former member of the Nigerian Football Federation’s Technical Committee, Austel Elumelu, has insisted that the Super Eagles remain firmly on course to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the mounting pressure and scrutiny surrounding the team ahead of next week’s high-stakes playoff showdown in Morocco.
Speaking with calm assurance, Elumelu said the players have finally grasped the gravity of the situation and demonstrated that understanding through their improved performances in the latter stages of the group campaign.

According to Elumelu, the late surge that propelled Nigeria into the playoff bracket was no fluke. He said the squad’s renewed determination, work rate, and mentality during the final round of matches revealed a group that understands they are fighting for national pride and a place on football’s biggest stage.
He stressed that qualifying remains entirely within Nigeria’s reach, provided the team approaches the playoffs with “discipline, intelligence, and absolute focus.”
However, the former technical committee member cautioned against complacency and urged the coaching crew to fine-tune certain aspects of the team’s play. He noted that while the attack has begun to click, there is an urgent need for composure and communication in defence to avoid unnecessary errors that could prove costly against opponents as determined as Gabon or Cameroon.
Elumelu also expressed concern about the goalkeeping department, calling for direct engagement with the shot-stoppers to ensure they fully understand the magnitude of the moment.
He advised the technical team to maintain a stable, well-structured approach to training, adding that tactical clarity will be crucial in Morocco. Elumelu emphasised that the players must treat every minute of the playoffs as decisive, with no room for lapses or emotional distractions.
In a message to Nigerian fans, he appealed for unity and positivity, insisting that support from home can lift the morale of the squad. “This team has realised what is at stake,” Elumelu said. “If they keep that same hunger, discipline and awareness, they will qualify.”
