South Africa’s head coach Desiree Ellis acknowledges that Banyana Banyana enter WAFCON under pressure as defending champions, but she insists they are taking the tournament one step at a time.
Ellis said that while many players from the 2022 winning squad remain—including 14 core members—the team does not perceive itself as the title-holder but as contenders aiming to prove their worth once more .
She emphasized a balanced squad featuring new talent scouted from age-grade systems, ensuring depth and adaptability.
“We have been blending experience with fresh energy, maintaining the core while adding youthful zeal,” Ellis explained.
With group-stage matches beginning July 7, South Africa is preparing to defend the crown in a field stacked with threats.
