The Nigerian quarter-miler stormed to victory in her heat, setting a new African indoor record while also recording a massive personal best in the process.

Her remarkable run places her at the top of the world rankings for 2026, making her the fastest woman globally this season over the distance.

Onojuvwevwo’s blistering performance saw her finish ahead of Madison Whyte, who clocked 50.68 seconds to place second in the heat.

In addition to the African record, the time also marks a major milestone in Nigerian athletics history. Onojuvwevwo’s 50.28 seconds makes her the fastest Nigerian woman over 400m (indoors or outdoors) since 2000, when legendary sprinter Falilat Ogunkoya ran 50.04 seconds in Osaka.

The achievement highlights the rapid rise of the Nigerian athlete, who continues to establish herself as one of the leading quarter-milers in collegiate athletics.

Breaking both personal and continental records on such a stage underlines her growing reputation as a major contender in global sprinting.

With the championship progressing, Onojuvwevwo will now aim to build on this historic performance as she advances further in the competition, carrying the hopes of Nigerian athletics while signaling a bright future in the women’s 400 metres.
