With AFCON kicking off on 21 December 2025, Ekpo believes the Super Eagles must avoid early mistakes and ensure they do not lose their opening group game.
“The first match is very important. You don’t want to start AFCON with defeat. It affects confidence and puts pressure on the rest of the games,” Ekpo warned.
Nigeria are drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania, and Ekpo insists the coach must clearly communicate his tactical plan so every player understands their role from the outset.
“The coach must be clear. Players need to know the game plan, their responsibilities, and what is expected of them,” he said.
Ekpo emphasized that unity within the squad will be critical, especially after recent disappointments that have tested belief and morale.
“Unity is key. If the team is united, it becomes very difficult to beat them. Distractions must be kept outside the camp,” he added.
The former midfielder noted that AFCON tournaments are often won by teams that manage pressure well rather than those with the biggest names.
“AFCON is not about reputation. It’s about discipline, focus, and teamwork. You must fight for every point,” he said.
Ekpo also highlighted the importance of building momentum early, explaining that a positive start allows players to settle and play with freedom.
“When you start well, confidence grows. The players relax, and the football becomes better,” he noted.
He urged the Super Eagles to approach the tournament with humility and hunger, reminding them that many teams will see Nigeria as a target.
“Every team wants to beat Nigeria. The boys must be ready for that challenge,” he warned.
Ekpo concluded by expressing belief in the squad’s quality but stressed that execution will matter more than expectation.
“The talent is there. If the team stays united and focused from the first match, Nigeria can go far in Morocco,” he said.
