Ekiti State Governor Apologizes, Promises Action Over Poor Treatment of Youth Athletes At National Games

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has expressed his deep apologies and vowed to take action following the poor kitting and treatment of athletes representing the state at the Seventh National Youths Games in Asaba, Delta State.

Governor Oyebanji described the situation at the Games, where Ekiti athletes were inadequately kitted, as an embarrassment to the athletes, their parents, the state, and Ekiti people both at home and in the diaspora.

During the opening march past of the event, Ekiti State athletes were seen in poor attire, and this incident gained widespread attention on social media, leading to criticism.

Speaking to the athletes upon their return, Governor Oyebanji expressed his sincere apologies for the inappropriate behavior of officials from the State Sports Council and assured the athletes that justice would be served appropriately.

He acknowledged that the state government had provided support for the athletes but that certain officials had behaved inappropriately.

The governor announced that he had instructed the Head of Service to initiate necessary actions to sanction those involved in the matter according to civil service rules.

He emphasized the state’s commitment to sports development and promised to pay special attention to sports in Ekiti State.

Governor Oyebanji revealed plans to establish a functional Indoor Sports Centre and improve the state’s stadiums, not limited to football but across various sports.

He urged youth athletes to excel in both sports and education, emphasizing the importance of diligence in their studies.

Furthermore, the governor assured the coaches that they would also receive attention and exposure. Cash rewards are planned for both athletes and coaches.

Governor Oyebanji’s response reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the issues faced by youth athletes and ensuring that such incidents do not happen in the future.
