Edo Sports Commission, Insurance FC Mourn Passing Of Coach Godwin Izilein

The Edo State Sports Commission and Bendel Insurance Football Club have been plunged into mourning following the passing of veteran coach Godwin Izilein.

The esteemed football manager breathed his last at the age of 83 on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) after a brief illness.

According to his family, Coach Godwin Izilein had been battling a stomach disorder for some days, which ultimately necessitated surgery before his untimely demise.

In a heartfelt condolence message issued by the Edo Sports Commission, signed by its chairman, Olympian Yusuf Alli, the sports fraternity received the news of Coach Izilein’s passing with profound shock and sorrow.

“This is yet another devastating blow to the Edo and Nigerian sports community. Having recently mourned the loss of Coach Sebastian Brodricks Imasuen, we are now confronted with the painful departure of Coach Izilein.

His legacy as a distinguished football tactician who brought honour to Edo and Nigeria during his illustrious career will forever be cherished,” remarked Alli.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his bereaved family, praying that they find solace in this difficult time.

May the Almighty grant Coach Godwin Izilein eternal rest, and may his soul rest in peace,” he concluded.

Coach Godwin Izilein’s illustrious career spanned several decades, during which he left an indelible mark on Nigerian football.

Renowned for his coaching prowess, Izilein notably guided Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets and led the nation’s Super Falcons to victory in the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

Additionally, he served as the Head Coach of Bendel Insurance FC from 1997 to 1999 and managed Edo Queens in 2019 and 2020.

As tributes pour in from across the football community, Coach Izilein’s legacy as a dedicated mentor and influential figure in Nigerian football remains etched in the annals of the sport.
