Empoli made a bright start to the contest, taking the lead as early as the 5th minute through G. Guarino, who finished confidently to put the visitors ahead.
Palermo responded well and drew level in the 24th minute, benefiting from an own goal by Empoli goalkeeper A. Fulignati, which restored parity before the break.
The hosts stepped up their intensity in the second half and went in front in the 57th minute, when Joel Pohjanpalo converted from open play after a well-timed assist from Jean-Daniel Le Douaron to make it 2–1.
Empoli were searching for inspiration when Tyronne Ebuehi was introduced, and the Nigerian international made an immediate impact. The full-back scored the equaliser in the 72nd minute, capping a lively cameo that also included two successful tackles in just 20 minutes of action.
However, Palermo had the final say. With six minutes remaining, Pohjanpalo completed his brace from the penalty spot in the 84th minute, sealing all three points for the home side.
