Eagles Must Win AFCON Title As Consolation For Missing World Cup, NFF Secretary-general Mohammed Sanusi Declares

Top shots of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have apparently given up all hope of seeing the Super Eagles qualify for next year’s FIFA World Cup in USA, Canada and Mexico, as they are already talking about seeing the team win the African title as a consolation.

Sports247 gathered that the switch of attention towards the possibility of winning the continental trophy to compensate Nigerians came from no less a person than NFF secretary-general, Dr Muhammed Sanusi, who admitted that the World Cup qualifiers have not been smooth for the Eagles.

The football scribe stated categorically that, with Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 Mundial continuously facing a thick cloud of uncertainty, the onus is on the Eagles to ensure they win the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco to make up for missing the global showpiece.

Sanusi declared: “The players and the coach are aware of what is at stake. They know that we placed second the last time out.

“Nigerians will also hope that, with what is happening to our World Cup qualifier, they expect nothing outside our AFCON victory, and I believe it is possible.”

He concluded with an assurance that the NFF will do everything within its power to ensure that the Eagles return from Morocco with the glittering African trophy in January.

“On our own part, what we’re supposed to do is create the enabling environment that would allow them to succeed, and we will continue to do that,” the astute football technocrat promised.
