Durodola vs Browne: How Visa Delay, Medical Issues Force Bout Cancellation in Canada

The much-anticipated clash between Nigerian veteran boxer Olanrewaju “God’s Power” Durodola and American contender Marcus Browne for the vacant WBC International Cruiserweight title was abruptly cancelled over the weekend, just hours before the scheduled event at Place Bell in Quebec, Canada.

The bout, originally set for Saturday, June 28, was expected to be a career-defining moment for both fighters. However, a combination of visa delays and medical documentation issues ultimately led to its cancellation.

Speaking on the situation, Durodola revealed that his visa approval came in too late, making it impossible for him to travel in time to meet fight requirements and pre-bout obligations. “Late visa approval was the major issue,” the Nigerian pugilist confirmed, adding that he had been ready and willing to compete.

In a separate statement, New Era Promotions, the fight organizers, disclosed that the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux (RACJ) — Quebec’s boxing regulatory authority — had requested additional medical tests from the fighters. Unfortunately, the results submitted did not meet the RACJ’s standards.

“To prioritize the health and safety of the fighters, the decision was made to cancel the fight,” said a spokesperson for New Era Promotions. “It’s a disappointing but necessary action.”

The bout was highly anticipated by fans, with both fighters bringing impressive résumés to the ring.

Durodola (50-10-0, 44 KOs), a 44-year-old powerhouse, is known for his aggressive style and knockout power. A former WBC Silver Cruiserweight champion and African titleholder, he was aiming to cap his storied career with another significant belt.

His opponent, Marcus Browne (25-2-0, 16 KOs), a former WBA Interim Light-Heavyweight champion, was making his cruiserweight debut. The American southpaw was looking to make a statement in a new weight class and use the WBC International title as a springboard to a full world title shot.

The cancellation has left fans and stakeholders disappointed, but both fighters are reportedly open to rescheduling the bout should logistics and medical requirements align in the near future.

For now, the wait continues as Durodola eyes another opportunity to reignite his presence on the global boxing stage, while Browne looks to regroup in pursuit of cruiserweight success.
