Former Nigerian international Duke Udi has come out strongly in support of the Super Eagles’ recent demands for unpaid wages, stressing that the players are fully justified in asking for what is rightfully theirs ahead of Thursday’s World Cup qualification playoff against Gabon.
Udi dismissed criticism over the timing of the players’ action, insisting that their grievances are legitimate and should be addressed immediately.

“Politicians and public servants get paid on time, so why should footballers be treated any differently?” Udi asked. “These players are risking their careers and putting in maximum effort to represent Nigeria on the world stage. It is only fair that they receive what is owed to them.”
He acknowledged that some fans and commentators have questioned the timing of the protest, but he stressed that financial fairness cannot wait, even in the face of high-pressure matches.
“I understand the concerns about focus and preparation, but we cannot overlook years of unpaid dues,” Udi explained. “The players are still professionals; they know what is at stake, and their message is clear—they want respect and accountability from the NFF.
Udi further warned that ignoring players’ legitimate claims could negatively impact morale and performance, particularly in a tournament as crucial as the African playoff for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“It’s about creating a professional environment where players feel valued. If they go onto the pitch knowing their demands are ignored, it could affect concentration and results. The NFF must act responsibly and resolve these issues without delay,” he added.
The former midfielder praised the players’ courage in standing up for themselves while urging a swift and fair resolution before the first whistle in Rabat. Udi concluded by highlighting that the Super Eagles’ focus, preparation, and unity on the pitch remain paramount, and addressing these off-field matters promptly would only strengthen the team’s chances of securing a World Cup berth.
