D’Tigress Star Promise Amukamara Admits: Other Teams From Africa Are Getting Better

A member of the title-winning D’Tigress squad to this year’s African Women’s Senior Basketball Championship (AfroBasket 2025) in Cote d’Ivoire, Promise Amukamara has posited that one important lesson that should be learnt from the recent competition is that other countries across the continent are getting better.

Sports247 reports that the Charnay BB of France forward, who was born in New Jersey, USA, equally advocated for more developmental efforts in Nigeria, because D’Tigress did not have an easy route towards this year’s title in Abidjan.

The 32-year-old star recounted: “The path we took to get here was hard. So, it was great that we came out by winning the trophy. This is because other teams in Africa are getting better.”

She went on to make a case for the introduction of talent development programmes in order to discover and develop young ones who will continue the winning streak.

Amukamara advised, “We need to start building infrastructure for young athletes so that they can practise regularly in the game.

“We also need to support them with more money. I know the gift that the president extended to us was a lot, but that was what we were deserving.

“There’s a need for similar efforts to be channelled towards youth development and grassroots programmes as well, not just as rewards.”

She concluded with a declaration that each of the players in this year’s D’Tigress squad truly deserved the largesse from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and stressed that the next generation of talents should be encouraged to make the country proud.

“It was good to be rewarded after all the sacrifices and hard work that we put in. I appreciate the government for extending their support and being there for us. I hope it continues that way for all our teams in the future,” Amukamara enthused.
