Nigeria’s female basketball national team, D’Tigress’ coach, Rena Wakama has disclosed that a high level of zeal and hunger for glory is spreading among her players ahead of this year’s continental championship, Sports247 reports.
With the latest African Women’s Basketball Championship (AfroBasket 2025) set to tip-off this Friday in Cote d’Ivoire, Wakama disclosed that she is happy with how her players were able to reconnect quickly at their camp in Abuja.

The 30-year-old graduate of Western Carolina University in the USA and current assistant coach of Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) outfit, Chicago Sky, declared that their mission to CIV 2025 is to clinch a fifth straight title for Nigeria.
Wakama added, “We know, going into this tournament, everyone is coming on a mission. We want to win a fifth title.
“So, we are ready to withstand any obstacle that comes out. I am happy that we have been able to reconnect and get our focus together.”
The amiable yet astute basketball tactician, who was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, concluded by pointing out that the mission to AfroBasket 2025 will spill over into another quest and zeal for honours at the Olympic Games in 2028.
“Our short-term goal is to win AfroBasket again, while the long-term goal is to keep our eyes on the Olympics,” Wakama pointed out.
