Dozek Cup: Washington Memorial Grammar School Emerge Champions As Competition Scope To Expands

Washington Memorial Grammar School has emerged winner of the inaugural edition of the Dozek Cup for inter School Football Competition in Onitsha.

Two goals, one on either half of the thrilling finals at Chuba Ikpeazu Stadium, by Chukwuemeka Ezeh and Joseph Nwoga respectively, saw the winners to an emphatic 2-0 win in the contest.

Six schools participated in the tournament as organizers SARADE Consults look forward to an expanded tournament in 2024.

Chief (Dr) Donatus Nzekwei, an ex-student of Christ The King College, CKC, Onitsha, sponsored the tournament as a corporate social responsibility.

“He wants to give back to society. And decided to start from the secondary schools to revive the rivalry between schools in Onitsha”, Emeka Raphael, Chairman of the Organising committee said.

“This competition is also aimed at fishing out hidden talents and nurturing them to national and international heights so they can make a successful career in football thereby taking them away from social vices.

“Today, we’re happy we’ve successfully come to the end of this first edition. We’ve also selected some players too.

“We look forward to expanding the scope of the competition next year. We’re grateful to the Principals and Games Masters of the various schools that took part in this tournament.

“We’re also pleased with the spirit of sportsmanship displayed by the players and students of the schools. This is a clear indication that the future, indeed, is bright for our students, not only in academics but as well in sports”, he emphasized.
