The Super Eagles forward touched down in the Spanish capital on Sunday, February 1, 2026, after Atlético reached a full agreement with Atalanta on a deal valued at €40 million.

The transfer package includes a €35 million fixed fee and an additional €5 million in performance-related add-ons.

Negotiations between both clubs reportedly reached a breakthrough late on Saturday night, with Lookman opting for a move to the La Liga giants despite strong interest from Turkish side Fenerbahçe and Serie A outfit Inter Milan.

Lookman has agreed to a long-term contract with Atlético Madrid, believed to run until 2030 or 2031, and will earn an estimated €6 million per season.

His decision to join Diego Simeone’s side was said to have been significantly influenced by a personal phone call from the Atlético manager, who views the winger as a key part of the club’s long-term attacking plans and a potential successor to

Antoine Griezmann.

The 27-year-old enjoyed a highly successful spell at Atalanta, most notably scoring a historic hat-trick in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final to secure the club’s first-ever European title.

He has also continued to shine on the international stage, earning a place in the Team of the Tournament at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after registering four goals and four assists in six appearances for Nigeria.

In the 2024/25 season, Lookman was one of Serie A’s standout performers, scoring 15 goals and providing four assists in 31 league matches, while also contributing decisively in the UEFA Champions League.

Upon completion of the transfer, Lookman will become the first Nigerian player to feature for Atlético Madrid’s senior team, marking a historic milestone for both the player and Nigerian football.

An official announcement is expected once medicals are successfully completed and contractual documents are signed.
