Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, has challenged the newly elected board of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) to adopt a fresh approach and align with the ongoing reforms reshaping Nigeria’s sports sector.
Speaking shortly after the federation’s elective congress, Dikko emphasized the importance of performance, insisting that the new board must deliver visible progress in the next four years.

“They have to do things differently. They have to align with the new vision and reforms coming into the Nigerian sports sector,” he said. “In four years, when we return to assess them, the Athletics Federation must be in a far better place than it is now. That will be the only measure of their success.”
Dikko described the executive roles as a responsibility owed to the nation, urging the board to view their election as a debt to be repaid through hard work and tangible results.
“I’ve told them they must see their election into the executive committee as a debt. And the only way they can repay that debt to Nigerians is by performing very well and taking athletics to a higher level in line with the vision for Nigerian sports.”
