Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, has clarified Nigeria’s position regarding the appeal filed against DR Congo, stressing that the case is founded strictly on alleged breaches of FIFA regulations.

Reacting to growing public debate, Dikko said the appeal is being handled jointly by the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Football Federation, adding that it should not be interpreted as an excuse for Nigeria’s failure to qualify directly.
“This is not about making excuses,” Dikko stated. “The appeal is purely based on alleged violations of the rules. If there were breaches, then the right thing must be done according to FIFA statutes.”
He noted that while Nigeria has already shifted focus toward rebuilding and future competitions, the country remains hopeful that justice will prevail if the world football governing body rules in their favour.
“We have moved on and are planning ahead, but if FIFA decides in our favour, it could provide another lifeline,” he added. “The final decision rests with the appropriate authorities.”
Nigeria’s appeal is still under review by FIFA, with stakeholders awaiting a definitive ruling as attention gradually turns to preparations for upcoming international competitions.
