Dessers becomes first Nigerian to win highest goal scorer in Eredivisier

Super Eagles new boy and Heracles Almelo of the Netherlands striker Cyriel Dessers becomes the first Nigerian player in history to win the top scorer award in the Dutch Eredivisie after scoring 15 goals in 26 matches.

Some days ago, the Dutch league was cancelled due to the outbreak of the corona virus and sporting actions can no longer go on. The Dutch government has banned all sporting activities in the Netherlands until September 1 and this makes Dessers and Feyenoord’s Steven Berghuis to be crowned top scorer after finishing with the same number of goals.

In so doing, Dessers has joined the list of players to have won the top scorer award in the past including legends of the league like Marco van Basten, Romario, Dennis Bergkamp, Ronaldo, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Luis Suárez.

Dessers also recalls his most memorable and beautiful goal which he regarded as his best. When asked, Dessers picked his game-winning strike against the champions Ajax Amsterdam in February.

“Yes, Ajax-home was the most beautiful. The moment was fantastic because it was against Ajax and also decisive,” Dessers said to Voetbal International.

“On the other hand, the one against Twente was also fantastic. The atmosphere in that game was incredible. The player added. “Everything that was going on around that match was really a very special moment and a very special goal for me.” he concludes

The twenty-five-year-old striker is set to make his debut in the green and white outfit of the Super Eagle’s before the outbreak of the corona virus pandemic. Due to his fine form, he is expected to make a move, maybe out of the eredivisie.
