Deputy Echeta Targets 50 Goals in 2026, Backs Super Eagles for AFCON Glory

Nigerian winger Deputy Echeta has set ambitious personal and national targets for 2026, declaring his intention to score more than 50 goals while expressing strong belief in the Super Eagles’ quest for Africa Cup of Nations success.

Echeta made the remarks in an interview with Sports247 after delivering a top-rated performance for Zakho SC in their 1–1 draw against Al Karkh in Round 9 of the Iraq Stars League on Tuesday, 31 December 2025.

The lively attacker opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a composed finish, registering his third league goal of the season.

Zakho’s early lead came in a heated encounter that saw both sides reduced to 10 men before halftime, following the dismissal of Al Karkh’s N. Al Gahwashi in the 38th minute.

Parity in numbers was restored in the 55th minute when Zakho’s Orinho was sent off, before Y. Hamoud struck in the 71st minute to earn Al Karkh a share of the points.

Reflecting on the match on the final day of 2025, Echeta outlined his lofty ambitions for the year ahead.

“Between now and December 2026, I want to score over 50 goals,” the winger said.

Echeta also took time to praise the Super Eagles for their performances at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, expressing confidence in the team’s ability to lift the trophy.

“The players are trying their best, and so far they have been one of the best teams, having played all three group matches,” he added. “I believe they have what it takes to win the trophy. I wish the Super Eagles all the best and hope they go on to win the AFCON.”

The draw leaves Zakho SC seventh in the 20-team Iraq Stars League standings, with 15 points from nine matches.

Echeta’s impressive form in Iraq has also been rewarded off the pitch, with Zakho SC recently extending his contract until the end of the 2026–27 season.

The former Rivers United winger has stood out for his pace, direct attacking style and growing goal threat, convincing the club to secure his services for an additional two years.

As he continues to flourish in the Iraqi top flight, Echeta will be keen to translate his club form into greater opportunities on the international stage.
