Detroit Pistons center Ugonna Onyenso says he intends to maintain the defensive qualities that earned him an NBA opportunity as he prepares for his rookie season.
The Nigerian-born center was selected 53rd overall in the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets, with his draft rights subsequently acquired by Detroit.
Onyenso believes his ability to protect the rim and make an impact defensively is the foundation of his game, and he wants to ensure those qualities remain central as he adapts to the professional level.
“My defence is what got me here, so I want to keep doing that and continue making an impact on that end of the floor.”
The 6-foot-11 center was one of the leading shot-blockers in college basketball during his senior season at Virginia, averaging 2.9 blocks per game and earning a place on the ACC All-Defensive Team. He also led the ACC in blocks and recorded 21 blocks during the conference tournament.
While defence remains his immediate priority, Onyenso also recognises the need to expand his offensive game as he makes the jump to the NBA.
During his final college season, he began showing greater willingness to shoot from outside, making 10 of 36 three-point attempts, while also shooting 72.7% from the free-throw line.
The Pistons will therefore be looking at a young center whose most established strength is his ability to protect the paint, run the floor and finish around the basket, while his offensive development continues.
Onyenso also brings international experience to Detroit. Born in Owerri, Nigeria, he spent three years at NBA Academy Africa in Senegal before moving to the United States, and became the youngest player ever to represent Nigeria’s senior men’s national team when he made his debut at 17.
His defensive profile has already attracted attention from NBA scouts, with his length, mobility and shot-blocking ability regarded as the strongest aspects of his game.
As he begins his NBA career, Onyenso’s objective is straightforward: *preserve the defensive identity that earned him his opportunity while gradually adding more offensive dimensions to his game.*
