Death Of Aquatic Federation President Puts Sudden Stop To Schools’ Swimming Competition

The mysterious death of Nigeria Aquatic Federation (NAqF) president, Dr Nnamdi Chamberlain Dunkwu brought a sudden end to plans he put in place to start a schools swimming competition on Saturday in Abuja.

Sports247 gathered that everything was already on course for the competition to commence early on Saturday at Moshood Abiola National Stadium, but everything came to a sudden halt when news emerged that Dr Dunkwu was dead.

The deputy chief of staff to speaker of the House of Representatives reportedly slumped and gave up the ghost at home, few hours after inspecting facilities in his first ever schools swimming competition.

Although many guests and competitors were already at the venue, as the event was scheduled to begin at 10am, the event had to be cancelled and everyone quietly left the venue, as sad news of his demise spread.

A press statement by the federation’s media department lated noted, “Dr. Dunkwu, widely regarded as a passionate advocate for aquatic sports development, was known for his tireless commitment to nurturing young talents.

“(He was) repositioning swimming and other water sports in Nigeria. His leadership brought renewed energy to the federation, with initiatives aimed at grassroots development, athlete support, and stronger institutional partnerships.

“Beyond the pool, Dunkwu was respected in governance circles for his service at the National Assembly, where he worked closely within the House of Representatives, contributing to administrative coordination and legislative operations.

“Colleagues, athletes and stakeholders in the sports sector have begun paying tribute to a man many described as visionary, humble, deeply committed to youth empowerment and national development.

“His passing leaves a significant void within the Nigeria Aquatics Federation and the broader Nigerian sporting community, where he was seen as a driving force behind efforts to elevate aquatic sports to new heights.”
