Deaf Eagles Edge Gambia on Penalties to Retain WADU Trophy

The Deaf Super Eagles of Nigeria on Saturday retained their crown at the 13th West Africa Deaf Football and 3rd Athletics Championships after defeating Gambia 4-1 on penalties in the final played at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

The thrilling contest ended 1-1 in regulation time.

Salaudeen Saleh gave Nigeria the lead in the first half, but the Gambians struck back after the break to force the game into penalties.

In the ensuing shootout, Nigeria converted four spot kicks while Gambia managed just one.

With the victory, Nigeria extended their dominance in the competition, lifting the West Africa Deaf Union (WADU) Trophy for the sixth time.

Gambia, meanwhile, are still chasing their first-ever triumph.

Sierra Leone will host the next edition of the championship in 2026, having secured the hosting rights.

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, who performed the ceremonial kick-off and witnessed the final, presented the trophy to the champions alongside Mr. Tchangnou Sadeck, Sports Programme Officer at ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre.

Dikko also announced that the victorious team will be officially received at his office on Monday.

As hosts, Nigeria further showcased their superiority by dominating events at the 3rd edition of the Deaf Athletics Championship, which was held concurrently with the football tournament.
