Speaking after Nigeria’s memorable victory over Uzbekistan, Dr. Adewusi said the triumph validated the resources and commitment poured into upgrading the club to international standards.

“We are very highly elated as a club,” he told Sports247 .

“Not only have we provided world-class facilities and amenities to host this tournament, we also mobilised enormous resources to make it a success. In spite of the fact that many people underrated our team, the players proved everyone wrong today.”

Dr. Adewusi noted that Nigeria’s victory was even more remarkable given the higher ranking of their Uzbek opponents, describing the outcome as one that exceeded expectations.

“The Nigerian team has surpassed all expectations and delivered this win for us,” he added.

The LLTC 1895 president also applauded the impressive turnout of fans, describing their support as historic, especially as the event was ticketed.

“I am highly impressed and very grateful to Nigerians who came out in their numbers to cheer our players. This is one of the first times a Davis Cup event here has been gated, yet people paid for tickets and still showed up massively,” he said. “They sacrificed their time and resources, and that support played a big role in what we witnessed today.”

According to Dr. Adewusi, the victory was the result of a collective effort involving players, coaches, spectators and organisers.

“What we saw today was a combined effort of everyone — the coaches, the team, the spectators and all stakeholders who were determined to deliver success,” he stated.

He also highlighted the crucial role of the media in amplifying the tournament’s impact.

“The media reach has been massive and almost impossible to quantify.

Everywhere you go now, people are talking about Lagos Lawn Tennis Club hosting the Davis Cup. You made our reach limitless,” he said, thanking journalists for their coverage.

Reflecting on the club’s rich history, Dr. Adewusi recalled hosting global tennis icons over the decades, including the Williams sisters, and emphasised the club’s legacy as the oldest recreation club in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“This club has continued to host global players and the very best in the sport,” he said.

“Now our Nigerian players have shown that they can rise through the ranks — from Group III to Group II — and even move to Group I, where global tennis truly resides.”

He concluded by reaffirming the club’s commitment to supporting Nigerian tennis and thanked all stakeholders for making the Davis Cup playoff a success.
