David Okereke Set for Benevento Move as Serie B Return Beckons

Nigerian forward David Okereke is set to begin a new chapter in Italy after agreeing to join Benevento on a free transfer, according to reports surrounding the deal.

The 28-year-old became a free agent on July 1, 2026, following the expiration of his contract with Cremonese, bringing an end to his spell with the Italian club.

Okereke had attracted interest from several clubs after his productive spell in Turkey with Gaziantep FK, with reports linking him with Kocaelispor, Kasımpaşa and Sampdoria, among others. Kocaelispor’s interest was particularly strong because of his previous relationship with coach Selçuk İnan, who worked with the Nigerian during his time at Gaziantep.

The Nigerian striker’s experience in Italy and Turkey made him an attractive option for clubs looking for an experienced attacking player. He has previously represented Spezia, Club Brugge, Venezia, Cremonese and Torino, while also spending time on loan at Gaziantep.

His move to Benevento would see him return to Italian football as the club prepares for life in Serie B following its promotion from Serie C. Benevento finished top of Serie C Girone C last season and secured their return to Italy’s second tier.

The move would also give Okereke another opportunity to revive his career in Italy after a difficult final period at Cremonese, where he spent significant spells on the fringes of the squad before returning to action towards the end of the 2025/26 season.

Okereke’s arrival is expected to provide Benevento with additional experience and attacking quality as the club prepares for the demands of Serie B football.

Editor’s note: Current transfer databases still list Okereke as a free agent, so the Benevento move should be treated as reported/agreed rather than officially completed until the club confirms his registration.
