Daniel Bameyi, skipper of Nigeria’s Flying Eagles, expressed profound confidence in his side’s ability not just to top their group at the upcoming U-20 World Cup but to compete for the trophy.
According to Bameyi, what will separate the contenders from the pretenders is mindset. “If we maintain belief, discipline and a positive attitude in every match, no obstacle is too big,” he said during a pre-tournament press conference.

He acknowledged the tournament will bring together the finest youth talents globally, but insisted the Flying Eagles are not here merely to participate. “We know the reputation and quality of opposition we shall face. Yet, our preparation has been rigorous; our resolve, stronger,” he noted. Bameyi emphasized cohesion among players, saying that unity in adversity would be key: “When things go wrong on the pitch, we must remain calm, remain together. That is when champions are born.”
The captain also paid tribute to the coaching staff’s deployment of a tactical plan that balances defensive solidity with attacking ambition. He believes that scoring first will be crucial, but also that resilience — especially in matches where tensions run high — could make the difference.
Nigeria’s path might include tough fixtures, but Bameyi pointed out that every team at this level has strengths and vulnerabilities. “We will study our opponents, adapt when necessary, but above all play our game — with courage, with heart.”
He ended on a motivational note: “There is no reason we cannot go all the way. Why not us? We are ready. The dream is alive…”
