For Nigeria, the Games provide another important platform to identify, nurture and expose the next generation of sporting talents.

Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, said the Games represent an opportunity to strengthen the country’s pathway for young athletes while building a sustainable future for Nigerian sports.

According to Olopade, greater emphasis on youth development remains crucial to ensuring that promising athletes receive the exposure and support required to progress to senior international competition.

The Dakar Games will feature 25 sports, alongside 10 engagement sports, creating a broad programme designed not only to provide opportunities for young athletes to compete but also to promote participation and interaction beyond the traditional competition schedule.

The event will be staged across three host zones in Senegal — Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly — with athletes, coaches and officials expected to converge on the West African country for a major celebration of youth sport.

As the countdown enters its final month, attention is increasingly shifting towards the young Nigerians expected to represent the country and the opportunities that await them in Dakar.

Beyond medals and results, the Youth Olympic Games offer emerging athletes invaluable international experience, allowing them to compete against some of the world’s most promising young talents while gaining exposure to the demands of elite sport.

Olopade said the Commission remains focused on supporting the development of Nigeria’s emerging athletes and ensuring participation in major international youth competitions contributes to a stronger pipeline of athletes for future Olympic and global sporting events.

The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games will also carry enormous significance for the continent.

The event marks a historic milestone as Africa prepares to host an Olympic sporting event for the first time, placing Senegal and the wider continent at the centre of global youth sport.

For Nigeria, the final month of preparation presents an opportunity to ensure its young athletes arrive in Dakar ready to compete, learn and gain experiences that could shape the future of Nigerian sports.

The countdown is on, and a new generation of Nigerian sporting talents is preparing for its moment on the global stage.
