Cyriel Dessers Receives Fresh Accolades, After Scoring In UEFA Champions League Qualifier

An early shower of accolades has gone out for Glasgow Rangers of Scotland striker, Cyriel Dessers, as The Gers’ coach, Russell Martin praised the Nigerian star’s work rate and attitude.

Sports247 reports that Martin was excited on Tuesday night, as Dessers got a 15th minute assist and then converted a 45th minute penalty to help his side defeat visiting Viktoria Plzen of Czech Republic 3-0 in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.

It was a home game, with 45,730 spectators gathered at Ibrox Stadium for an potentially explosive fixture that was part of the UCL’s third qualifying round.

Dessers first set up new summer signing Djeidi Gassama, who eventually got a brace, in between which the Super Eagles star, who was born in Belgium, netted from the spot in his first game of the new season for Rangers.

In reaction to Desser’s impact, Martin disclosed that the in-form former Dutch Eredivisie highest goals scorer could have been on his way out of Glasgow after many summer offers came his way.
The gaffer also admitted they he is happy to see Desser stay put, not only because of his goals, but also due to his work rate and wholesome attitude.

Martin elaborated, “Cyriel is the only one we’ve actually had a bid for. It’s interesting, though, that when he comes on, he runs so hard.”

Martin went on to use Dessers as an example for other players in the team to follow, especially as the squad felt his absence during last weekend’s Scottish Premiership draw away to Motherwell and The Gers struggled without him.

“Some of the others need to have a look at him as an example. But there’ll be people left behind.

“They need to understand what path this football club will take and what it means to work hard … not just when we’re having a nice time,” said the 30-year-old Martin, who had previously coached Milton Keynes Dons, Swansea City and Southampton.
