Cricket: ‘Injury Couldn’t Stop Me!’ — Christabel Chukwuonye Reveals How Faith And Team Spirit Powered MVP Heroics

Nigeria women’s cricket star Christabel Chukwuonye has opened up on the emotional journey behind her Most Valuable Player award at the recently concluded Kwibuka Women’s T20 Tournament, revealing she battled injuries throughout the competition before emerging as the standout performer in Rwanda.

Chukwuonye admitted the road to claiming the tournament’s biggest individual prize was far from easy, with fitness concerns threatening to derail her campaign.

“It was a very challenging tournament for me,” Chukwuonye said.

The Yellow Greens all-rounder disclosed that the constant encouragement from her teammates played a decisive role in helping her push through difficult moments.

According to her, the belief shown by those around her, coupled with her faith, enabled her to remain composed and deliver when Nigeria needed her most.

“My teammates kept encouraging me, and my faith gave me the strength to stay calm under pressure,” she added.

The Nigerian international credited the team’s togetherness for helping her produce match-winning performances despite carrying injuries during the tournament.

Although delighted to be named the competition’s Most Valuable Player, Chukwuonye insists the award is only another step in her development.

“I’m happy with the MVP award, but I know there are still areas of my game that I need to improve,” she stated.

The Yellow Greens star has now shifted her attention to Nigeria’s next international assignment, where she hopes to build on her performances in Rwanda and continue contributing to the team’s growing success on the international stage.
