Yobe Desert Stars Football Club Management Committee has, on Friday 3rd April decided to slash players salaries.
The meeting which was held by the poolcommittee, headed by the chairman Hon. Goni Bukar Lawan, took major decisions on the payment of players and technical crew of the main team, feeder and under 15 teams.
Sports247 gathered from a memo released by the management committee that due to the global outbreak of COVID19 and the economic meltdown, the club has decided to inform members of the main team that they will receive 25% of their monthly allowance while feeder and under15 teams will receive 50% of their monthly allowance.
The club’s management committee further states that with this development, the management regret any inconveniences these reduction may cause and they expect a maximum cooperation and understanding.
Teams across the world most especially Nigeria where majority of the funds of the club are gotten from sales of tickets, will be largely affected. No thanks to the outbreak of the corona virus pandemic.
Before the total stop of football action across most parts of the world, some leagues took to playing behind closed doors to cub the spread of the virus before to total shutdown
The club was founded in 1991. The Potiskum based team is run by the Yobe state government. They started as an amateur side and eventually were promoted to the second division in 2000. They won promotion to the top in 2001.They had spent only one season on the topflight before being relegated with just 11 wins in 34 games.
Yobe desert stars played the 2002 Nigerian FA cup final but lost 3-0 to Julius Berger FC. Currently, they have lost 4 matched out of their last five games in the second cadre of Nigerian football.
