Newly elected president of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Comptroller General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has pledged to transform the sport through stronger sponsorship, grassroots expansion, and transparent administration, following his victory at the federation’s elective congress in Abuja.
Adeniyi, who also serves as the head of the Nigeria Customs Service, was unanimously voted in by all 14 executive board members, running unopposed at the Gymnasium Hall, Package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium on Saturday.

In his acceptance speech, Adeniyi expressed deep gratitude for the confidence reposed in him and promised to build on the achievements of his predecessors while introducing new strategies to make wrestling a household sport in Nigeria.
“This is not just about leadership; it’s about service,” Adeniyi said. “We want to make wrestling accessible to every child, attract corporate sponsorships, and ensure our athletes get the global recognition they deserve.”
He added that under his watch, the federation will prioritise female participation, capacity development for coaches, and international exposure for athletes competing in African and world championships.
Adeniyi’s emergence has been widely welcomed within the wrestling community, with stakeholders describing it as a “fresh start” for the federation, which has produced global stars such as Odunayo Adekuoroye and Blessing Oborududu.
