Waldrum, whose contract was extended based on his World Cup performance, expressed his primary goal for the team: “The goal, obviously, is to qualify for the Olympics,” he said. He emphasized that the team’s focus is currently on the challenging matches against Cameroon, marking a crucial stage in their Olympic qualification journey.

Discussing the readiness of the team for the Cameroon matches, Waldrum acknowledged the historical rivalry between the two countries. He recalled that Cameroon had previously stopped Nigeria from going to the Olympics and that Nigeria had prevented Cameroon from reaching the World Cup in the last WAFCON in Morocco.

Despite the challenges, Waldrum expressed confidence in his squad. “I really like our squad, I like the team, I like the team chemistry,” he said. He stressed the importance of maintaining the momentum from the World Cup and building on it to improve their performance.

Waldrum also highlighted the constraints of the international break, which limits training time. He said, “We’re going to have to rely a lot on our experience at the World Cup to take us through, especially this first match at Cameroon before we really get a few really good days of training before the second match.”

This interview sheds light on the high stakes and intense preparation involved in the team’s journey towards Olympic qualification. As the matches against Cameroon approach, the team’s resolve and strategy under Waldrum’s leadership will be put to the test.
