Coach Purity Akuh Crowned Africa’s Best After Leading Nigeria to Wrestling Glory in Morocco

Following Nigeria’s spectacular performance at the 2025 African Senior Wrestling Championships in Casablanca, all accolades have turned toward the strategic mind behind the triumph — Coach Purity Akuh, who was awarded Africa’s Best Coach after leading Team Nigeria to a historic medal haul.

With 10 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze, including an astonishing 9 golds in the women’s freestyle category, Nigeria finished as one of the most dominant forces at the championship. Coach Akuh’s leadership, calm presence, and technical acumen were key to the victory.

“This victory belongs to the wrestlers,” Akuh said while receiving his trophy in Morocco. “They stayed focused, worked hard, and never gave up. I’m proud to be their coach, but the glory is theirs.”

Akuh took a moment to thank those who stood behind the team’s journey. He expressed deep appreciation for Hon. Daniel Igali, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, and the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports, for their unflinching support and belief in the team.

“Their encouragement laid the foundation for what we’ve achieved,” Akuh noted. “Wrestling in Nigeria is blessed to have leaders who care deeply about athletes.”

He also extended gratitude to the National Sports Commission, acknowledging the collective efforts of both the Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, and the Chairman, Mallam Shahu Dikko.

“Both Hon. Olopade and Mallam Dikko have been instrumental. Their commitment to Nigerian sports is real, and it showed in how they backed us from preparation to competition,” Akuh added.

The decorated coach emphasized that Nigeria’s wrestling potential could explode globally if this level of support continues.

“If we continue to invest, upgrade our training centers, and give wrestling the structure it deserves, Nigeria will not just dominate Africa — we’ll conquer the world.”

As the team returns home to a hero’s welcome, Coach Purity Akuh stands tall — not only as the best coach in Africa, but as a shining example of what strategic leadership and national unity in sport can achieve.
