Barau FC head coach, Eugene Agagbe, has expressed gratitude and optimism following his team’s 2–1 victory over Niger Tornadoes in their Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Matchday 20 encounter.
Speaking during the post-match interview, Agagbe first gave thanks for the positive result that marked the beginning of the second stanza of the season on a winning note.
“Glory be to God for the victory,” he said. “A thousand miles begins with a step, and today we have started the second stanza by stepping in with a win.”
The Maliya Boys secured the crucial three points through first-half and early second-half goals from Moses Uche in the 25th minute and Mohammed Umar in the 53rd minute respectively, before seeing out a tense finish.
Agagbe also highlighted the impact of new additions to the squad, revealing that several of them were immediately trusted with responsibility.
“We were opportune to train with the new players,” he explained. “Three new players started the game, while three others were on the bench. It shows we are building confidence in them and integrating them into the team.”
Despite the victory, the Barau FC coach was quick to acknowledge areas that still require improvement, particularly in defence.
“We lacked focus in defence, which is why we conceded a goal,” Agagbe admitted, stressing the need for better concentration as the season progresses.
Looking ahead, the coach outlined his short-term objective for the team as the league enters a critical phase.
“Within the next seven matches, my personal target is to move the team away from the red zone,” he said, underlining the importance of consistency and results.
Agagbe also turned his attention to Barau FC’s upcoming fixture against Enyimba FC, noting that the Aba giants had earlier picked up a draw in his absence.
“Enyimba came to pick a draw when I wasn’t around,” he remarked. “Now we are ready to face the People’s Elephant in Aba.”
With renewed belief, fresh faces in the squad, and clear targets set, Barau FC will look to build on this momentum as they continue their push for stability and progress in the NPFL.
