Former Super Eagles midfielder Christian Obodo has urged Nigeria’s senior men’s national team to maintain unity, discipline, and collective focus as they prepare for the high-stakes CAF World Cup playoffs next month in Morocco.
Speaking in Abuja, Obodo emphasized that qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will depend more on team cohesion than individual brilliance.

He said the Super Eagles have the talent and experience to succeed but warned that internal distractions or complacency could prove costly.
“Nigeria has one of the strongest squads in Africa, but talent alone doesn’t guarantee success,” Obodo said. “We need every player pulling in the same direction — no egos, no divisions. It’s the team that stays together that will qualify.”
The Super Eagles will first take on Gabon in the mini-qualification tournament before a potential final clash against either Cameroon or DR Congo — a path that will determine who advances to the intercontinental playoffs in March 2026.
Obodo, who featured for Nigeria at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations, said he has seen positive signs in the team’s recent matches under head coach Eric Chelle, praising their energy, defensive improvement, and work rate. However, he stressed that focus and tactical discipline will be key against opposition that “know how to punish even the smallest mistake.”
“This is not the time for showboating or unnecessary pressure,” Obodo added. “Every game must be treated like a final. The players must trust each other and play as a unit — because qualification will not be given, it must be earned.”
He concluded by saying that Nigerians have every right to expect success, but the players must now match that expectation with hard work, unity, and determination.
