Chioma Ajunwa Demands Proper Recognition for Tobi Amusan’s Silver Medal Success

Olympic gold medalist Chioma Ajunwa has joined calls demanding that Tobi Amusan receive more meaningful reward and recognition after securing a silver medal at the recent World Athletics Championships in Japan—the only medal Nigeria won at the event.

Ajunwa warned against Nigeria’s habitual neglect of its elite athletes, arguing that consistent recognition is vital for sustaining performance and nurturing future champions.

Ajunwa argued that Amusan’s feat at the world stage merits acknowledgement on par with what national teams—such as the Super Falcons—receive after continental success. She emphasised that World Championships carry greater prestige than many regional tournaments, and should be honored accordingly.

Her remarks come at a time when many past athletic successes by Nigerian stars have been quickly forgotten, despite the motivational and symbolic value such recognition carries. Ajunwa’s demand is clear: excellence must be valorised, not sidelined.
