Chile 2025: Flying Eagles Coach Zubairu Unfazed by Argentina’s Credentials — “It’s a Challenge That Must Be Overcome”

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have turned their attention to a mouthwatering Round of 16 showdown with Argentina at the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.

After narrowly advancing from the group stage as the last of the four best third-placed teams, the seven-time African champions now face one of the tournament’s most formidable sides.

The Flying Eagles collected four points from three matches — one win, one draw, and one defeat — enough to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

In sharp contrast, Argentina have been flawless so far, topping their group with a perfect record of three wins from three matches.

Alongside Japan, the South American giants are the only teams to record maximum points in the group stage, reaffirming their status as serious title contenders.

Despite the gulf in form between both teams, Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu insists Nigeria will approach the tie with confidence and conviction.

“Every game is a new challenge, and we’ll prepare with the same mentality — focus, discipline, and teamwork,” Zubairu said after Nigeria’s qualification was confirmed.

“We respect Argentina, but it’s a challenge that must be overcome.”

The clash stirs memories of the 2023 edition, when Nigeria shocked hosts Argentina 2–0 at the same stage to record their first-ever victory over the Albiceleste at this level.

Historically, both nations have met four times at the FIFA U-20 World Cup. Argentina have won twice, Nigeria once, while one encounter ended in a draw.

Their most memorable meeting remains the 2005 final, where a young Lionel Messi led Argentina to a 2–1 victory over the Flying Eagles.

Argentina remain the most successful nation in the history of the competition, boasting a record six titles.

Nigeria, meanwhile, are still chasing a maiden crown despite reaching the final twice.

With history, pride, and a coveted quarter-final ticket on the line, Wednesday’s clash in Santiago promises to be another electrifying chapter in this storied rivalry.
