Chido Obi-Martin: Manchester United Starlet Earns Denmark U21 Call-Up As Nigeria Keeps a Watchful Eye

Manchester United’s teenage sensation, Chido Obi-Martin, has officially been called up to Denmark’s U21 national team, marking a major milestone in his rapidly rising career and reigniting interest around his international future.

Born in Glostrup, Denmark, to a Danish mother and Nigerian father, Obi-Martin is eligible to represent Denmark, Nigeria, or England.

While he has played for Denmark at the U16, U17, and U18 levels, this latest promotion to the U21s solidifies Denmark’s commitment to the highly-rated forward.

The 17-year-old striker joined Manchester United in 2024 after a headline-grabbing youth career at Arsenal, where he once scored 10 goals in a single U16 match against Liverpool.

Since moving to Old Trafford, Obi-Martin has continued to impress—netting a hat-trick on his U18 debut and making early appearances with the senior squad under manager Ruben Amorim.

The Danish Football Union announced his inclusion in the squad for upcoming friendlies against Poland and Italy, with the possibility of a spot in the squad for the UEFA U21 European Championship later this year.

Obi-Martin has been at the center of a quiet tug-of-war between three nations. While England and Nigeria have both made attempts to court the striker, he has so far shown loyalty to Denmark.

In a recent interview, he stated, “I was born in Denmark, I have better friends in Denmark, and I’m just really happy to play for Denmark.”

Nigerian football officials, however, are still hopeful that he might consider switching allegiance in the future, especially given his Nigerian heritage and the precedent set by other dual-eligible stars.

As Obi-Martin continues to rise through the ranks at Manchester United and now Denmark’s youth system, his talent, maturity, and international potential make him one of the most closely-watched young players in world football.
