Chidera Ejuke: “How moving to Europe has helped me grow as a player and person”

Chidera Ejuke has talked about his career path thus far, which has taken him from his native Nigeria to Norway, the Netherlands and now Germany via Russia.

The winger was recently unveiled as a new Hertha Berlin player. He teamed up with the German Bundesliga club on a season-long loan from CSKA Moscow.

Ejuke started his professional career with Gombe United in Nigeria before moving to Europe for the first time in 2017 when he signed with Vålerenga in Norway. He left after two years, joining SC Heerenveen in the Dutch league in 2019.

CSKA Moscow paid €11million to bring him to the VEB Arena in the summer of 2020. After two seasons in Russia, the 24-year-old will continue his career in Germany with Hertha Berlin.

The Nigerian international spoke to his new club’s website on how moving to Europe and experiencing new cultures and different styles of football has helped him grow as a player and as a person. He said:

“Moving to Europe was a big step, but one that I always wanted to take. I got to experience a number of new things. Getting to know new cultures and a different style of football in new countries is always exciting and I’m looking forward to this now in Berlin.

“These experiences have definitely helped me grow as a person and a player too. My game has changed as a result. I’m just looking forward to getting to know the Bundesliga now.”

What objectives does he have for his stay in Berlin? Ejuke replied: “I need to first speak to the coach before I can give a concrete answer to that. I’m firstly just looking forward to meeting the lads and the staff.

“I know that last season didn’t go to plan, but we’re all here together now to start a new campaign – and I want to have some great moments with the team.”

Ejuke could make his competitive debut for Hertha Berlin as early as the 31st of this month, when the Old Lady takes on Eintracht Braunschweig in the first round of the German Cup.
