Chiamaka Nnadozie Joins Orlu’s List Of Personslities Behind Okwaraji, Ada Jesus, Others By Sam O’Femi Fasetire

July 26, 2025 turned out to be another historic date in the lofty annals of wavemakers from Orlu in Imo State, as one of their daughters, Chiamaka Cynthia Nnadozie became an African champion on that date.

Being the first choice goalkeeper for Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons, meant that all eyes were bound to be on Nnadozie, as she and her colleagues pulled off a stunning comeback from 2-0 down to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

It was the 10th WAFCON title for Nigeria and second for Chiamaka, who had another feather added to her glowing cap, as she also got an award as best keeper of the tournament, with leverage to become Africa’s top female shot-stopper for the second year running.

On returning to Nigeria 72 hours later, Nnadozie was among the excited lasses who President Bola Ahmed Tinubu rewarded with $100,000 each, three bedroom houses at New Hope Estate in Abuja and Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) national awards.

That meant Nnadozie became the second footballer from Orlu to gain national recognition, after the huge doses of attention showered on late Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji (who sadly died while in sction for the Super Eagles during a World Cup qualifier against Angola on August 12th, 1989).

Nnadozie also joined a lofty list of esteemed personalities from the ancient city that has a local government and senatorial zone named after it, as Orlu has produced people from all sectors of life, a rare list of personalities who are creating waves at home and abroad.

Reigning alongside Nnadozie in the football sector are two male players – Joseph Chukwudi Obidiaso in Lybia and Frederick Ogechi Okwara in Turkey; while an actress and comedienne popularly known as Ada Jesus continues to set tongues wagging in the entertainment industry. All thanks to their roots, socialisation and early grooming days in Orlu…

This serene city in the rustic countryside has also etched its marks in the political annals of Nigeria, as it is the only local government to have produced two governors for Imo State – being Chief Achike Udenwa from Amaifeke Orlu and Owelle Rochas Okorocha from Ogboko.

Also from this area fondly called ‘the commercial capital of Imo State’ came a former Imo State deputy governor in the person of Dr Douglas Acholonu, whose family has produced several wondrous personalities that are renowned nationally, continentally and globally.

From this lineage have been the first senator of former Otlu/Okigwe division, Eze Patrick Ibeakamna Acholonu; and the first Orlu indigene to become a Supreme Court judge, Justice Ignatius Chukwudi Acholonu; as well as highly-acclaimed author, playwright and researcher, Dr (Mrs) Catherine Acholonu.

In similar vein, this time from the sporting sector, the latest female personality to celebrate is Chiamaka Nnadozie, who was born on December 8, 2000 in Orlu, a commercially vibrant metropolis and second most developed city in Imo State, after the capital, Owerri.
After learning the basics of football goalkeeping on the dusty streets of Orlu, she signed for Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt in 2019 … and her journey to national and global stardom began.
Her performances with The Garden City side earned Nnadozie an invitation to the women’s under-17 squad, Flamingos, then quickly to the under-20 side, Falconets, and rapidly into her present status as Nigeria’s topmost female ‘keeper at senior level.

Her roll call of outings for Nigeria include 2018 FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup, 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, 2019 WAFU Women’s Cup of Nations, 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, 2019 Africa Games, 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, 2024 Olympic Games, and 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Along the way, Nnadozie has picked up many laurels and accolades, among which are youngest keeper with a clean sheet in a Women’s World Cup match (2019), Africa Games gold medal (2019), team captain in a World Cup match (2023), two WAFCON gold medals (2018 and 2025), African Women’s Goalkeeper of The Year (2023 and 2024), as well as WAFCON best goalkeeper (2025).

Her exploits have also been notable at club level, as Nnadozie moved at accelerated pace from Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt to Paris FC of France, where she was twice voted best goalkeeper in the French Women’s Ligue Un; which paved the way for her highly celebrated transfer to Brighton Ladies FC of England on June 27th, 2025.

Without much ado, Nnadozie joins the queue of esteemed personalities who hail from Orlu, which still mourns Umudioka’s Sam Okwaraji annually, but now has something soothing, sweet and fresh to flaunt from the round leather game.

All hail the safest female fingers in Africa … Cynthia Chiamaka Nnadozie!!
