CHAN 2024: Super Eagles B Set for Historic First Clash with Defending Champions Senegal – Coach Eric Chelle Confident of Strong Start

Nigeria’s Super Eagles B are primed for a historic showdown as they face defending champions Senegal in their opening Group D match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Tuesday.

The encounter, taking place at the 15,000-capacity Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar City, at 6 pm Nigeria time.

This marks Nigeria’s much-anticipated return to CHAN after missing the 2020 and 2022 editions.

The clash also represents the first-ever CHAN meeting between Nigeria and Senegal, adding intrigue to this West African battle.

Despite losing several key players, including Papa Daniel, to overseas transfers shortly before the tournament, head coach Eric Chelle remains optimistic about his side’s chances.

“Our preparation has been good, and we plan to bring everything we’ve worked on into this match,” Chelle stated during Monday’s pre-match press conference.

Addressing the challenge of facing the reigning champions, Chelle emphasized quality over rivalry.
“I don’t see this as a derby. It’s a contest between two big African footballing nations. Senegal have a strong generation and a solid team, but we’re ready for them,” he said.

Nigeria, bronze medallists in 2014 and runners-up in 2018, will rely on a home-based squad featuring Nigeria Professional Football League stars such as Sikiru Alimi, Michael Tochukwu, and goalkeeper Ozoemena Ani.

Emerging talents Leonard Ngenge and Adedayo Olamilekan are also expected to bring youthful energy and unpredictability to the lineup.

Senegal, meanwhile, enter the tournament with proven CHAN experience but face early setbacks after losing first-choice goalkeeper Idris Ndiaye to injury. Coach Souleymane Diallo has drafted Cheikh Lô Ndoye as a late replacement, a change that could test the defending champions’ defensive stability.

With Group D completed by Sudan and Congo, Chelle insists his focus is solely on the opener against Senegal.
“We’re not thinking about Congo or Sudan right now. Our priority is tomorrow’s match. We’ll take it one game at a time,” he said.

Co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, the 2024 CHAN features a condensed Group D with just four teams, making a strong start crucial for both Nigeria and Senegal as they aim to progress to the knockout stages.
