Kenya head coach Benni McCarthy has cautioned his players against complacency ahead of their crucial second Group A match against Angola at the ongoing TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.
The match is scheduled for Thursday at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

The Harambee Stars began their CHAN 2024 campaign with a gritty 1-0 win over two-time champions DR Congo and could seal a spot in the quarterfinals with another victory.
However, McCarthy has urged his squad to stay grounded and focused.
“Nothing is done yet. That was just one win, an important one but we have to remain focused,” said the former South Africa international.
“We faced a very tough opponent and worked hard to get that result, but we shouldn’t let it get into our heads. The focus now shifts to Angola and the ambition is the same , go in and fight for maximum points.”
McCarthy downplayed the importance of possession, noting Angola’s style and statistics in their opening match against Morocco.
“They had over 60 percent possession but still lost. I don’t care if we have 30 or 40 percent the only thing that matters is the final result,” he added.
Defender Alphonce Omija echoed his coach’s words, insisting the players are well-prepared for the challenge ahead.
“The DRC game is behind us. Angola is a strong side and we’ve prepared thoroughly for them,” said Omija.
“Mentally, physically and tactically, we’ve done the work. We know we’re carrying the hopes of a nation, and we’re ready.”
On the other hand, Angola are seeking redemption after a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Morocco.
Head coach Pedro Gonçalves acknowledged Kenya’s home advantage but stressed the need for resilience.
“They’re playing at home with full support and they’re very athletic and quick. But we know what’s at stake and what’s required of us,” said Gonçalves.
Angola defender Eddie Afonso revealed that the team has thoroughly reviewed their performance and is ready to respond positively.
“We’ve reflected on our mistakes and have mapped out our approach. It won’t be easy, but we’re experienced enough to handle the pressure,” Afonso concluded.
With both teams eager to define their paths in the tournament, Thursday’s clash promises intensity and high stakes.
